A Spectrum for Success in Achieving Behavior Goals
This video explores whether success in animal training requires a perfectly executed behavior. It suggests that trainers should focus on a "spectrum of success" with achievable goals tailored to the specific animal and situation. Factors like the species, the animal's learning history, and the training environment can all influence what's realistic. We outline a process for defining success, which can involve achieving smaller components of a complex behavior or adapting the goal as circumstances change. Each small win can improve the animal's well-being and pave the way for further progress. The process also includes refining procedures throughout the training process. The trainer can th...

    the question imho is, is it still +r if it involves coercion/aversive stimuli? from my experience i can say if possible it`s better to stay under treshhold and work with +r instead of using -r by removing the trigger and making the trainee constantly uneasy.

    • @BarbaraHeidenreich
      @BarbaraHeidenreich 2 месяца назад

      Thank you for the comment. Unfortunately, this course is not about the details of applying a negative reinforcement procedure. This course is about providing genuine choice :) But to address your question, when negative reinforcement is maintaining an undesired response and the aim is to teach a new response maintained by that same reinforcer, I start under conditions in which the stimulus would not create undesired responses (for example, an "uneasy" response as you describe) This would mean I am reinforcing what I do not want if I did that. I start under conditions in which the animal can give the desired response, such as calm and relaxed, and remove the stimulus, so this is the reinforced response. There is no need to create distress :) Often, I see animals who are calmer with such a procedure than those who look conflicted trying to access food but are coerced due to R+ competing with R- with only one way to access the R+. This course explains more :) I also have a very detailed course with guided instruction on how (and when) to apply a R- procedure to optimize welfare in animaltrainingfundamentals.com

      @@BarbaraHeidenreich thanks for your answer! i think you partly misunderstood what i meant - i wasn`t talking about reinforcing undesired behavior but using -r to get the desired response. if there was no distress/unpleasant feeling it wouldn`t be -r. of course mixing +r and -r can be coercive, that`s why i think it`s better to stay under treshhold and only use +r if possible.

    • @BarbaraHeidenreich
      @BarbaraHeidenreich 2 месяца назад

      @@cinnamon8884 Again, this course isn't about whether to use R+ or R-. That depends on what is maintaining the behavior. (The discussion on how and when to apply a R- procedure is better addressed in other courses I have and addresses the concerns mentioned.) I am a fan of R+. However, R+ can be coercive if the animal has only one way to access the desired outcome, and that is what is described as an apparent choice. This course helps explain how to give the animal genuine choice using any reinforcement. I hope that helps clarify. :)

    Beautiful and these foundations are what I used on my love bird to teach him to fetch a rattan ball. He also dunks it in a mini hoop. I'm trying to get him to ride this mini bike but the pedals are so tricky to manoeuvre in his defence. It's a cheap one from wish. I should invest in a proper one with decent pedals.😂

    I would say restrictive typically applies to setting (I've actually only heard it in IEP meetings) like crate and rotate, while intrusive has more applications for prompting, like hand over hand, or other interventions. Definitely were used frequently in direct care settings, the legal background really connects the pieces for me.

    Great discussion! Many domestic animal trainers should listen to this video. Other words that come to mind and that I have been subject to is blacklisting when I reported abuse. Tribalism, being the outsider is never easy as we all want to feel worthy or valued. In dog training, the 'tribe' of (inappropriately) labeling dog training as purely positive or positive only causes huge rifts in the industry. I am suspicious of a Ph.D. instructing dog trainers to use positive-only techniques or selling programs to train dog trainers when they have never spent long years training dog owners to train their dogs, lack of experiential knowledge is detrimental to the pet industry. Yes, education is important and so is being in the trenches. Combining the two is the foundation for a professional.

    That is fascinating. In your experience working with ostrich, would you say they are unintelligent? It is often said they are “dumb animals”. I always wondered if that was a misconception, or if they do in fact have relatively simple cognitive abilities. Would love to find an un biased opinion on this

      I am always amazed at things animals can do that humans cannot :) Therefore, I tend to view organisms as being amazingly adapted to the environments in which we live. Ostriches certainly do learn and change their behavior as do we.

    I barely subscribed since having your channel in my feed which I’m grateful for as I’m an animal lover and have 3 in my home 2 shitzu girls and a male Siamese cat whom we adopted 4yrs ago unexpectedly from the nearest Pet Smart and im actually very allergic to cats which I already knew when we took him home but there was something in his behavior and in his eyes that connected and spoke loud and clear to me even among several cats they had up for adoption “Louis” didn’t try to connect physically speaking but his face and body just looked like he had given up and was miserable and not used to being up in a cage around strangers which btw i certainly could tell once we got him home he had been taken care of and spiked by the choices he made when eating and treats he would go for. I just couldn’t leave him there…. It was like impossible for me to let him give up on Living. I know it sounds nuts but anyhow needless to say I live on Zyrtec daily for allergies and thankfully my hubby does all the litter chores and his grooming which is fine as he is a short hair. I am exited at all the videos you have since I’ve discovered your channel I’ve already learned so much that you share and thank you for your content. ❤much love from New Orleans 😊

    The Contra freeloading versus degrees of freedom conversation is an interesting one! The term Contra freeloading may describe the phenomena, but doesn't really tell us much about the procedure like degrees of freedom does.
